The 9-Pin J1939 female and 6-Pin J1708 connectors are without locking rings. The connector without the locking ring is pressure fitted and is more suited for a test or diagnostic environment where the connector is plugged and unplugged regularly.
The end of Deutsch 9-Pin J1939 female connector can be overmolded or not, according to your needs. If the ends are overmolded, the cables are more sturdy and durable. If not overmolded, the price can be lower because the raw material and labour cost is saved.

Application
The common application is to connect telematics or fleet management devices such as GPS Trackers to older 6 pin J1708 round diagnostic ports in medium and heavy duty vehicles model years from the early-to-mid-2000s or to 9 pin J1939 diagnostic ports.
This cable will also allow OBD2 diagnostic devices or scanners or fault code readers (with the appropriate software) to connect to commercial vehicles with the 6-Pin J1708 or 9-Pin J1939 diagnostic ports.
